Charting/trading and competitive gaming aren't very different. There's a lot of similarities between the two when it comes to mindset and progress.
At any given time, a competitive gamer would always welcome free MMR, rank, progress, etc. No different than how at any given time, a trader would welcome profit or an increase to his or her portfolio. BUT, the seasoned gamer AND the seasoned trader both understand these gains do not come for free.
You have to be in the mood to play "the game". You have to be mentally prepared and focused. And you have to be able to understand when opportunity is present. You may be in the mood to play, but perhaps there's no volatility, or perhaps a team composition that counters your team is in queue. During those times, you can strategize for the future, rather than let your itch to play go wasted. Review a full day's price action using the replay tool and see how you would have performed, then make adjustments. Refine your 2v2 strategies (WoW), optimize your item progression (DotA/LoL), or practice your aim/smoke placement (CS).
Loading up the charts or loading up a game when you're not in the mood to play is a recipe for disaster. You'll lose rank or you'll lose money. Respect your competition and know that it's going to require you to be at the top of your game to have a super solid day (to push to the top of the ladder or have a very profitable day).
If you're not in the mood, respect that feeling. It might be a calling to hit the gym, or see family, or handle whatever you've been putting off for days. But I know, as someone who's had strong moments of success (and failures) in both trading and gaming, you have to WANT to play to really push. When you NEED it, when you CRAVE it.. if you can also focus deeply during those times and control your emotions, that's when the magic happens.
