FBI reports Bitcoin ATM scam losses reaching a new high of $333 million in 2025
On December 31, according to the latest FBI data, in 2025, U.S. citizens lost over $333 million through Bitcoin ATM scams, a significant increase from $250 million in 2024. There are currently over 45,000 Bitcoin ATMs across the country, allowing users to quickly transfer cash into any digital wallet worldwide. Once the transaction is completed, the funds are almost impossible to recover.
Law enforcement has begun taking action. The Office of the Attorney General in Washington, D.C., has sued the major operator Athena Bitcoin, alleging that 93% of its transactions involve fraud. Several states have enacted legislation to regulate these devices, and experts are calling for stricter protective measures such as setting daily deposit limits.
