I watched in astonishment the figures regarding this hacking affair. Damn, 14.6 billion dollars in ETH stolen! When I think about it, it's almost grotesque - these North Korean hackers practically offered six months' salary to an entire country in one fell swoop.
The GDP of this country in 2023 is barely 16.4 billion dollars, and wage income only represents a few billion. It's crazy to realize that a group of hackers managed to steal the equivalent of almost the entire national economy!
Frankly, these North Korean hacker teams have something unique about them. This cold wallet theft is not petty poaching. We're talking about an operation that could finance an entire state for months.
I wonder how these funds are actually used. Certainly not to improve the lot of the North Korean people... In my opinion, everything goes directly into military programs and the pockets of the elites.
Cryptocurrencies were supposed to represent financial freedom, but they have become a tool for authoritarian regimes. These exchange platforms that claim to be secure should really reconsider their systems.
The irony in all this? While investors mourn their losses, somewhere in Pyongyang, hackers are probably toasting with champagne.
