In the times when the USA was just forming as a state, Spanish pesos were widely circulated in America. Traders, who were always in a hurry and lazy, shortened the inscriptions "Ps" on documents. Gradually, these letters began to overlap, turning into something resembling the modern dollar.

I have always found it amusing that such a powerful symbol was born out of ordinary human laziness! But today this sign makes people work like damned. Ironic, isn't it? 🙄

Hercules Pillars and Colonial Heritage

Another version, which I personally like better, connects the dollar with the columns of Hercules. Spanish coins often depicted two columns entwined with ribbons - very similar to two vertical lines with the letter S.

These columns symbolized Spanish power and colonial power. In fact, America, having won independence, appropriated the symbols of its former oppressor! A classic example of how revolutionaries often become like those they rebelled against. Financial colonialism simply changed flags. 🏴‍☠️

Currently, the single quote is more widespread – Western capitalism has become more self-assured and no longer needs unnecessary proof of its superiority. It already controls the global economy. 💼

What started as an abbreviation in trading books has become a symbol of global financial dominance. Today, the dollar sign is recognized even in the most remote corners of the planet. Isn't it amazing?

Unicode assigned it the code U+0024, and now pressing Shift+4 brings up this symbol. I often think about how many fates are decided by this simple sign every day. How many lives change because of whether you have access to dollars or not.

My view on the symbolism of the dollar

To be honest, for me the dollar is not just a financial sign. It is a symbol of a system that simultaneously creates opportunities and enslaves. How many wars have been started and how many regimes have been overthrown for the sake of control over the movement of these green pieces of paper with the sacred symbol "$"?

When I see this sign, I not only think of wealth and opportunities, but also of how the global financial system grinds entire countries, making them dependent on the dollar exchange rate and the policies of the Federal Reserve System.
