Ex-NRL Star Hayne Lost $780K in Prison Bitcoin Scam

Jarryd Hayne, the former NRL star, got burned. Bad. While locked up in Australia, he reportedly lost around $780,000 to a Bitcoin scam.

The mastermind? Fellow prisoner Ishan Seenar Sappideen. This guy seemed to have a real talent for deception. He's accused of swindling family and friends out of $4.6 million through what looks like a classic Ponzi scheme. Pretty sophisticated stuff for someone behind bars.

Sappideen sweet-talked Hayne and other inmates. Big promises. Massive cryptocurrency returns. He even claimed he'd generated something close to $300 million for previous clients. Sounds kind of fishy in retrospect.

Six inmates fell for it. Hayne included. They handed over more than $2 million between 2020 and 2022. All based on empty promises.

The authorities eventually caught wind of the scheme. Not entirely clear how they discovered it. But they moved Sappideen to another prison facility afterward.

It's surprising how cryptocurrency scams can flourish anywhere. Even in prison. Locked doors don't stop financial predators, it seems.
