"To be honest, this makes me very sad," she said in an interview with Politico on Friday without mentioning Scholz's name. She added, "For some politicians, getting a few votes is more important than ensuring peace and freedom in Europe." Earlier this week, Scholz said he had suggested expanding this year's 12 billion euros in special funds, but the additional funds could not come at the expense of cutting Germany's social spending. Baerbock's Green Party and Scholz's Social Democratic Party will compete in the early elections on February 23.
