Bandcamp announces a complete ban on AI-generated music, becoming the first mainstream platform to prohibit AI, aiming to protect the platform's human touch. This decision has received overwhelming support from Reddit users.
The well-known American online music platform Bandcamp recently announced that it explicitly prohibits listing music and audio content that is fully generated by AI or primarily created by AI, becoming the world's first mainstream music platform to ban all AI content.
In addition to banning generative AI content, Bandcamp also strictly prohibits using AI tools to imitate other artists' voices or styles. Violators will be considered infringers.
In the announcement headline, Bandcamp emphasized that the main reason for banning AI-generated music is to maintain the platform's “humanity.” Music is not just a consumer product but a result of human cultural dialogue, and Bandcamp hopes to establish a direct connection between artists and fans.

Regarding this new policy, Reddit users almost unanimously support it, believing that as platforms like YouTube, Spotify, and Pinterest are increasingly filled with AI content, Bandcamp’s stance can preserve the purity of independent music and ensure that genuine creators are not overwhelmed by mass-produced AI content.
However, some argue that Bandcamp's reaction to AI is excessive, suggesting that simply providing AI music tags for listeners to choose from would suffice; others believe that the ban is premature and may face many challenges in the future.
Taiwanese people may be less familiar with Bandcamp, but it holds an important position in the Western independent music scene.
Founded in 2008, Bandcamp is known for being friendly to creators. It allows artists to set their own prices, sell physical merchandise, and takes only about 10% to 15% commission, with the rest of the revenue going directly to the creators.
This high-profit-sharing model has attracted many independent musicians. For example, Amanda Palmer used the platform as early as 2010 to promote her albums, breaking away from traditional record label control.
In addition, famous indie game soundtracks such as Minecraft, Terraria, and To the Moon have also been released on Bandcamp, making it an important hub for gamers and indie music fans seeking quality content.

Bandcamp’s strong move to ban AI music reflects the deep anxiety within the music industry about the rapid development of AI technology.
A previous report by Crypto City indicated that a survey conducted by the French music streaming platform Deezer at the end of 2025 showed that the realism of AI-generated music has greatly improved, with 97% of respondents unable to distinguish AI from human-created content in blind tests. 71% of respondents were surprised by this result, and 64% expressed concern that AI could lead to a loss of originality in music production.
Deezer’s own data also revealed that a large amount of AI content uploaded daily involves fraudulent plays to steal royalties. CEO Alexis Lanternier stated that the survey results clearly show that people care about music and want to know whether what they are listening to is AI or human-made.
Against this backdrop, Bandcamp’s decision to adopt a tough policy to defend “human creation” may be an attempt to preserve the genuine warmth of human-to-human musical communication amid the algorithmic and automated AI generation wave.
