Ledger introduced the Recovery Key for Flex and Stax wallets.
The company Ledger has introduced a physical key, the Recovery Key, for restoring access to a wallet in case the seed phrase is lost. This is reported by The Block, citing the firm's press release.
The publication noted that the new product is currently available only for the Ledger Flex and Ledger Stax hardware wallets. Both models were introduced in 2024. Previously, we examined them in detail:
The Ledger Recovery Key is a physical card with an NFC module. The device operates offline and has a PIN code function to restrict access.
According to the release, to restore access, it is enough to attach the card to the hardware wallet. At the same time, the user can create multiple such keys, which will require confirmation directly on the device.
The interaction between the owner's card and wallet occurs "over secure NFC channels without intermediaries." It is based on Secure Element technology, which the company uses for its main products.
The source code of the Recovery Key is publicly available on GitHub. This is part of the company's commitment to transparency, as emphasized in the release.
The device has passed both an internal audit from the Donjon team and an external audit from the company Synacktiv. At the same time, the release states that the OS used by the key was developed by some partner of Ledger without mentioning the latter.
Recall that earlier the manufacturer faced sharp criticism after the presentation of the Recover function. Unlike a physical card, it allowed the owner to create a backup of their seed phrase on a cloud server, which the community considered too risky.
