After a hearing held on May 16 by the federal court in Washington, D.C., the Department of Justice announced that Council pleaded guilty to “conspiracy to commit aggravated identity theft and access device fraud” and will be sentenced to 14 months in prison. “Such behavior threatens the health and integrity of our market system,” said Jeanine Pirro, acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. “SIM card swapping attacks jeopardize the financial security of ordinary citizens, financial institutions, and government agencies.” The lawsuit documents indicate that the Council obtained approximately $50,000 in profits through a SIM swap attack, which is expected to be recovered. In addition, the judge sentenced them to 36 months of supervised release after serving their sentence.
